He was replaced by Lamar Williams, a childhood friend of Johanson's. On November 11, 1972, the group lost a second member when Oakley died in a motorcycle accident similar to Allman's. The guitarist was not replaced, although Chuck Leavell was added as a second keyboardist in 1972 after the band performed as a five-piece. Just two years after forming, however, Duane Allman died in a motorcycle crash in Macon on October 29, 1971. The Allman Brothers Band was founded in March 1969 by Duane and Gregg Allman with Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson. The band went through multiple personnel changes and broke up twice before retiring in 2014, when the lineup included founding members Gregg Allman, Trucks and Johanson, plus guitarist and vocalist Warren Haynes, percussionist Marc Quiñones, bassist Oteil Burbridge and guitarist Derek Trucks. Formed in March 1969 by brothers Duane (guitar) and Gregg Allman (organ, vocals), the group originally also included guitarist and vocalist Dickey Betts, bassist Berry Oakley, and drummers Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson. The Allman Brothers Band was an American blues rock band from Macon, Georgia. These extended jams capture the vibe of the Allmans in their warmth, power, and skill.Top: The Allman Brothers Band in 1972 (left to right: Butch Trucks, Dickey Betts, Jaimoe, Gregg Allman, Berry Oakley) Middle: The band in 1975 (Chuck Leavell, Lamar Williams, Butch Trucks, Gregg Allman, Jaimoe, Dickey Betts) Bottom:Warren Haynes, Jaimoe, and Derek Trucks with guest musician Eric Clapton in 2009 Fresh interpretations of classic songs like “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” “Blue Sky,” and “Jessica” are performed with respect and enthusiasm by some of the hottest jam bands recording today. What is manifested here is the energy and ability to improvise that are indicative of the Allman Brothers Band. Still today, more than thirty years after the formation of the legendary band, the cult following continues with legions of fans touring America to see the band perform their magic live. Their distinctly southern sound paved the way for many later bands and their mix of rock, country, blues, and jazz redefined the boundaries of rock music. The band revolutionized live shows by performing extended jams of their songs, sometimes stretching a song to 30 or 40 minutes without losing any of the excitement needed to keep the crowd interested. The Allman Brothers Band has become one of the most respected rock acts of their era, but it isn’t the myriad of albums they have released that earned them their reputation.
